From the time she was a little girl, Karolyn Paige Rideout-Guptill has always loved working with her hands. She and her cousin would paint rocks and create marks in the mud and
sand on Grand Manan Island. The texture of the Island, its soft grass, the
movement of the wind, the ripples of the ocean and grit of the sand, brought
her comfort. These materials challenged her, strengthening her love of art. As
she grew older, her dreams began to take on a more solid shape as she developed
a fascination with the knitted and crocheted pieces her grandmother created each year.
While in high school she loved creating land-art and time-based
sculpture. Upon completion, these sand works were demolished by the ocean. This
gave her a deep appreciation of the transience of her materials, and of the
working process.
Gradually her creativity expressed itself through the same outlet as her grandmother and she took up yarnwork.
